Ultrasonic assisted drilling is a promising operation for machining hard, brittle and tough materials. It is used to manufacture parts with high precision features, including optical, dental and electronic products. The evaluation of cutting force is very important because it directly affects the power consumption, tool life, dimensional accuracy and surface integrity of machined parts. The cutting force in ultrasonic assisted drilling is less than that in tranditional drilling. In ultrasonic assisted drilling, cutting force is directly affected by cutting conditions such as ultrasonic frequency and amplitude. In addition, the characteristics of the part material, such as hardness and fracture toughness, affect the machining behavior. Different mathematical models have been developed to estimate ultrasonic assisted drilling cutting forces based on process kinematics, cutting conditions and physical properties of part materials. These models have been verified by experiments. In this paper, the mathematical models of ultrasonic assisted drilling are discussed, which are used to predict the effects of cutting conditions on cutting force and metal removal rate.
Ultrasonic treatment can be used for high speed milling, drilling, grinding and boring.
Under the same conditions, the surface roughness can be increased by an order of magnitude. For the hard and brittle material processing, the processing efficiency can be increased by 100% compared with the traditional processing, and the tool life can be increased by more than 3 times.
