The principle of the ultrasonic crusher (homogenizer) is to destroy tissues and cells through cavitation and ultrasonic waves.

The sonotrode of the ultrasonic homogenizer vibrates very fast, causing the water molecules of the solution around the sonotrode to bubble and burst rapidly. This creates shear and shock waves that tear apart the tissue and cells of the material.

Sonicators (homogenizers) are ideal for separating cells and subcellular structures in suspension. Other applications include making emulsions, dispersing nanoparticles and reducing the size of suspended particles.
