Sonication can be used to produce nanoparticles such as nanoemulsions,nanocrystals, liposomes and wax emulsions, as well as for wastewater purification, degassing, extraction of seaweed polysaccharides and vegetable oils, anthocyanins and antioxidants extraction,production of biofuels, crude oil desulfurization, cell disruption, polymer and epoxy resin processing, binder dilution and many other processes. Used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, water, food, inks, paints, coatings, wood treatment, metal processing, nanocomposites, pesticides, fuels, wood products and many other industries. Ultrasound can be used to accelerate dissolution by disrupting intermolecular interactions. It is especially useful when the sample cannot be stirred, such as NMR tubes. It can also be used to provide energy for certain chemical reactions to take place. Sonication can be used to remove dissolved gases (degassing) from liquids by sonicating the liquid under vacuum. This is an alternative to the freeze pump defrost and blast method. In biological applications, sonication may be sufficient to destroy or inactivate biological materials. For example, sonication is often used to disrupt cell membranes and release cellular contents. This process is called sonoporation. Small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) can be prepared by sonicating dispersions of large multilamellar vesicles (LMVs). Sonication is also used to fragment DNA molecules, where briefly sonicated DNA is sheared into smaller fragments.
